  • PigRISK’s policy dialogue on disease risks mitigation and improvement of food safety in smallholder pig value chains in Vietnam

Date: 4 August 2017 Venue: Nghe An Province, Vietnam Participants:

    • Policy makers from Hung Yen and Nghe An provinces including Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, sub-department of animal health, sub-department of preventive health;
    • Representative of ACIAR (donor)
    • Representatives from core partners (HUPH and VNUA)
    • ILRI Hanoi researchers and support staff

Key contents:

    • The project team reported key results of PigRISK which focused on assessing food safety issues along the value chains such as microbiological risk assessment of Salmonella, risk factors of contaminations; and overall assessment of pig production and health.
    • The project team proposed policy changes to policy makers. Policy recommendations include the use of Good Agricultural and Hygiene Practices (GAHP) by smallholders; establishing pig raising groups to better connect farmers to markets; and improving hygiene practices to improve food safety along the value chain;
    • Policy makers from Hung Yen and Nghe An praised the project’s key outcomes and agreed with the project’s policy recommendations, especially the establishing pig raising groups. They also called for participatory policymaking and strengthening inter-agency cooperation between agriculture and health sectors to better manage food safety issues in the pig value chain in Vietnam.
    • Policy makers were committed to enhancing cooperation and partnership with the project scientists for the upcoming SafePORK project which will be kicked off in September 2017 to promote food safety interventions and advocate for more inclusive policies.

  • PigRISK feedback workshop at provincial level

Date: 28 April 2017 (Hung Yen) and 5 May 2017 (Nghe An) Participants:

    • Local representatives from the sub-department of animal health, department of food safety, department of health
    • Pig keepers, slaughterers, pork retailer and consumers
    • ILRI Hanoi researchers and support staff
    • Representative of ACIAR (donor) participated in Hung Yen

Key contents:

    • The project team reported key results of PigRISK achieved from June 2012 to May 2017 which focused on assessing food safety issues along the value chains such as microbiological risk assessment of Salmonella, assessment of heavy metals and antibiotics residue in carcasses and feed, risk factors of contaminations; and overall assessment of animal (pig) production and health.
    • Workshop participants suggested ways of improving food safety in smallholder pig value chain. Their feedback will be incorporated into the ‘SafePORK’ project proposal which is currently finalized.
